Summary points:

  • The Palliative Performance Scale (PPS) was originally intended for cancer patients and recently there were studies that extend its use to the non-cancer group.
  • Within the PPS framework, the component for “evidence of disease” is yet to be defined and applied for non-cancer group.
  • Although PPS may be useful for prognostication, it is important to understand this is with intrinsic limitation especially in the non-cancer group.
