[Journal article] Impact of Palliative Care in End-of-Life of Fibrotic Interstitial Lung Disease Patients

14 Apr 2022

Authors: Gin Tsen Chai, Han Yee Neo, John AbisheganadenAllyn Yin Mei Hum

Published in: American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine®. First published: 7 April 2022. https://doi.org/10.1177/10499091221083575

Summary points:

1. Palliative care services are beneficial to a broad group of fibrotic interstitial lung disease (ILD) patients, including connective tissue disease related ILD, fibrotic hypersensitivity pneumonitis and unclassifiable ILD.

2. Patients in the palliative-intervention group were referred more frequently to allied healthcare support, had higher advanced care planning (ACP) uptake and started on medications for symptom relief earlier in their disease trajectory. This was achieved without an increase in healthcare utilization.

3. Male gender was a significant predictor of 1-year mortality in this cohort of fibrotic ILD patients.
